A stunning antique Victorian pique brooch pin, circa 1870s. The unique brooch has gold and mother of pearl inlay with the most lovely bird and floral designs. The pique pin has a flat back with a tubular and c-clasp closure. The pendant shows the most vivid shades of brown and yellow in any light. Excellent craftsmanship. The brooch is in good condition with minimal wear for its age.
The technique for making pique, inlaying gold and silver into shell or ivory, was brought to England by the Huguenots when they were expelled from France in the late 17th Century. Pique jewelry blossomed in the late 1800's. All original superb antique Victorian pendant necklace!
